Biography

Erik was born in a rural city of Arsk, Tatarstan in Russia. His parents are farmers and he never saw himself as a sports player in his childhood. However, he was a bit too much playful kid, and he soon become bothersome, ruining farm with his friends, picking all the fruit from a tree, taking a train to Kazan city with no money etc… Being fed up with son’s mischievousness, his parents sent him to a local basketball team at the age of 7. He picked up the game really fast because there was nothing else to distract his attention, and 3 years later, he joined the sports facility in the city of Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan. The coaches at the facility had a tendency to be perfectionist, and impose interminable shoot practice, but he never lost his attention to continue those practices as he didn’t know other ways to have fun back at his hometown.

As the age of 14, he started playing at a junior league in the city. From this period, he started to be seen as a shooter and ranked top in 3PT shot percentage from the first year. After learning the basics at the facility, his movement and communication were also acceptable. On the other hand, his defensive plays were a big hole and he was even laughed at by fans when he was bumped to the floor by the opponent so easily. His body size was a concern over time, especially during Ramadan. He told to the media, “See, I’m a puffin. I have never thought of becoming a big center, even once.”. However, after a season-ending wing injury, he started working out at a gym seriously and the problem got better, like the level not being laughed at by the fans.

He has always thought of playing outside Russia --- born in a rural city of Tatarstan and grown up playing basketball at the training facility, he even had trouble with communicating in Russian, which limited his playing team only in Kazan, the half-Tatar half-Russian city. He rather studied English seriously with the help of the sports facility aiming at sending players internationally.

At the age of 18, he joined Stockholm Stormvind in EFBL. It has been rumored that the team invited him just looking at the stats to find potential scorers and the team was surprised at his thin body and his flaky defense. He gained 30 lbs in two months after coming to Stockholm, and his defence got somehow acceptable level.

As if responding to the expectation of the team, his middle-range shots and 3pt shooting filled the team’s need. Aside from that, looking at the number, the most impressive number is the number of steals. He explains that he was focusing on what he can do regardless of his body size, and interceptions are one of them. He also joked that it makes sense that he is good at stealing as he used to filch anything intriguing in his childhood.
