Leon Delmont (Cougar, born on June 15th, 1999) is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Seattle Summit, while the Bangor Tides selected him 1st in the 2017 FBA Draft.
Biography
Born in rural Indiana, Leon was the oldest of four cubs. To support the family both his parents worked long hours and relied on an elderly neighbor to watch the cubs after school let out each day. However, their small town offered little in the way of entertainment, so they spent many afternoons a local park across the street from his house. It was there that Leon first came across basketball, and the young cub was instantly enthralled by the sport. His after school caretaker could not help but notice the young cub standing pressed up against the fence watching the older furs play. It was at Leon’s seventh birthday that his neighbor would give him his first basketball, a gift that would shape Leon’s future. From then on any free time was spent on the court, dribbling around the court and trying to shoot on the full sized hoop, often failing due to his small stature. That did little to discourage Leon as he was hooked on the game, stashing away any spare cash to save for a new ball or new shoes, both of which were worn out fast given his daily trips to the court over the years.
Given the small size of his town, the Middle and High Schools were combined, creating a unique situation for Leon come Sixth Grade. By Middle School the cub could already shoot on a standard basket and was dribbling circles around his outclassed Middle School peers. His coach, who also coached the High School team, had Leon join the High Schoolers for practice just to give him a challenge. Playing against furs four to six years older seemed like an insurmountable challenge, but Leon relished every minute of it.
Due in part to his small size compared to the High Schoolers, and due to his already strong dribbling, Leon played as a Point Guard. He held his own against the older furs and gained some national attention as the cub who beat players far older than him. As he dove deeper into the sport throughout Middle School, he also became obsessed with the FBA. If he wasn’t playing he was watching players like Lucas Dupre and Mitchell Redding tear up the court and lead their teams to championships. He was so enthralled by the legends he would go to the park after practice and pretend to be on the same court as them, trying to mimic and master their playstyles.
His skill did not go unnoticed. As Leon approached the end of his Eighth Grade he was contacted by the coaching staff at Appalachian Academy, a relatively new private high school in West Virginia that served as a basketball prep program. Despite being established within the last decade, they were already considered an elite school due to bringing in many talented High Schoolers. And here they were wanting Leon to attend, and going so far as to offer him a scholarship to cover their tuition and board. It was a dream opportunity that validated Leon’s talent, but it also brought about renewed arguments at home. For years Leon struggled with his parents, them demanding he drop basketball and focus on school to better his life. While he tried to convince them to let him pursue his passion, no matter how slim a chance he could make it a career. But with a basketball prep school willing to pay for his tuition and provide an avenue to college, they finally relented and agreed...with one condition, he had to continue his education after High School.
Agreeing was easy for Leon, but moving away from home so young was tough and school did not make it any easier. Appalachian Academy brought players from around the United States with the goal of developing the talents of these young players, with the hope a few would make it to the FBA. Many of his new teammates were like him, considered the best of their cities and now they fought just to make it onto the court. Though all this talent led to issues on and off the court. Tempers and ego ran rampant and conflicts were common on the team. Between the money difficulties of his family and the toxic environment on the team, Leon had to navigate carefully, lest he ruin his chance of playing the sport he loved professionally.
By the end of it all Leon had grown in skill and matured. Becoming an overwhelming threat on offense, aided by a growth spurt. Going from 5’11” his Freshman year to 6’9” by the end of his Senior year. At times he was forced to fill in other positions, anything from Shooting Guard to Power Forward, though the further he got into the post the more he struggled. He had the height, but not the bulk needed to control the post, instead relying on his offense to win games. But when he played his preferred position of Point Guard, he excelled tearing up defenses with his explosive speed and pinpoint passing. In his final year he averaged 22.7 Points per game, with a 52.1 FG%,and 13.2 Assists per game, keeping his Assist to Turnover ratio at an impressive 4.92.
Due to his skills scouts had him listed as an elite five-star recruit coming out of High School, noting his elite quickness and dominance on offense as his major pluses. Because of his success he received multiple scholarship offers from top tier colleges. However, things at home took a downward turn that Spring. Job layoffs deeply affected the town, and Leon’s father was on the chopping block. With his family already struggling to get by and now pushed towards the financial brink with his father layoff, Leon made the tough choice of breaking the promise he made to his parents, foregoing college and declared for the FBA Draft. He knew they would angry, but he would do whatever it took to help them. Even if it meant breaking his word and sacrificing his chance to be the first in his family to go to college.
