One afternoon, both of them were in a local park. Roann, who was 15 then, was doing shadow boxing mixed with wrestling while his 12 year old brother, Viktor, was practicing his flashy layups. Viktor called out to his brother saying:

“Oi! Let’s run a game bro. 1v1 up to 10, ye?”.

Roann replied, “Yeah nah, not my thing.” while working on his boxing pivots.

“Neither were chokin’ and armbarrin’ kids twice your size, but ya still did it ey?”

as he spins the ball on his index finger. Roann sighs and agrees to play just to entertain and distract his little brother from the loss of their Father. What came next was a blur of Viktor passing through him with nasty crossovers, easy floaters and making him fall for feints. Roann only had basic PE knowledge of basketball and scored a few shots through pure strength and height advantage but it was clear that he was out classed by his younger brother. The score was 10-3. As Roann was panting and sitting on the concrete floor, Viktor was looping crossovers and tweens while standing still. With a cocky smirk, he says:

“I was just playin’ around with ya, bro. Imagine if I actually tried.” Then he proceeded to hit a step-back three pointer.

Roann scoffed and said “Whatever, I told you it ain’t my thing.” but there was a slight frustration he was feeling.

Viktor went to grab the ball, walked to his brother and patted his back saying:

“Just so ya know, ya need to think a few steps ahead of me, not just wait for me to start dancin’. Imagine it just like you’re in a fight. Last time I watched you spar, you saw the takedown comin’ then shut it down completely, choking him. You thought two steps ahead of him. Think like that, but with basketball. Now, up ya get, bro.” as he lends a hand.

Roann had a wide smile but quickly covered it by acting like he’s wiping his sweat off his forehead.

“Far out Vik, Acting like the big brother now are ya?” as he dapped his younger brother’s hand up, standing up with a little help.

Viktor noticed it but didn't bother bringing it up as he just smiled and said:

“Mate, with how you play right now? Ya need one.”

Roann playfully punches him saying “Alright alright, don’t get cocky. Anyway, do you wanna go home now?”

Viktor quickly checked his phone looking a little surprised. “Well, I’m meant to be at mah mate’s place this arvo. Didn’t expect it to be 3 already. I gotta go now bro.”

Viktor handed the ball over to his brother and walked off waving. Roann had a small grin saying:

“Cya Vik” and waved to him.

As he was all alone at the park, he looked at the ball, reminding him of what Viktor said.

“Just so ya know, ya need to think a few steps ahead of me, not just wait for me to start dancin’…”

The small pep talk Viktor gave to him stuck to him. That afternoon, Roann stayed and practiced dribbling as he was trying to replicate Viktor’s crossover that froze him 3 times. He also worked on his midrange game, especially fadeaways as he was mind blown when Viktor hit one on him. By the time it hit 7 pm, he was done. After the 4 hour practice session, Roann was exhausted but satisfied. He may not be as good as his brother but he definitely was way better than before.
