Biography
Red has a rather dualistic nature. His parents were fairly wealthy but wanted him to have the "everyman" education so he went to school in an inner city public school. To those he doesn't know he tends to come off as rather arrogant, cold and unapproachable. But to those he considers to be friends he's one of the most considerate people there are, which brings to light the next duality of his nature. Red is rather smart, but tended to not have good grades. Graduating with an engineering degree he set his sights on bringing his talent to the FBA.
Growing up he was almost always bigger than the rest of the kids his age and his build and demeanor often left him as being thought of as a bully. And to some extent he was. He was very protective of his friends and would often pick on those who picked on his friends, using his size to intimidate the other kids. In an effort to help the student councilor encouraged Red to join a sport to "channel that aggression."
Red considered this and debated between joining the football team or the basketball team but since he knew a cousin that really got messed up after getting a concussion in football he chose basketball. His parents were with him all the way with the choice and in high school hired a professional basketball trainer to help him become the best he could be.
However, he almost didn't make it to college. Though he is quite intelligent, to those he cares about he will drop anything to help them out as long as they need it, meaning he rarely got enough studying done to do all that well in his classes. But he still was able to do well enough and play well enough to make it to college and his playing shined a bit more once it was made clear to him that he would best help his friends by helping himself do well enough to stay a part of the team.
As a thing to help his training Red would frequently tinker with machines for one purpose or another. For instance, to help with his rebounding he rigged up a tennis ball launcher to lob basketballs at the rim. The first part of his college career he actually got into a lot of trouble. Given his history of being in the inner city and his protective nature (a thing where he considers it his duty to protect all players on his team smaller than him even if they don't need it) he would foul out of a lot of games and would frequently get technical fouls called on him for talking smack to the other team. But over his career in the college level he did learn quickly what was and was not allowed and once he did that his team's opinion of him improved, as did his game.
