Biography

Sarah Green-Blood claims the state government spent a million dollars on her before her teens were over. Growing up, she and her other four siblings were well-acquainted with workers from the DSS and DYS, counselors, child psychiatrists and public defenders – and for good reason. Sarah grew up in a depressed area of Massachusetts where assistance agencies outnumbered employment opportunities. Her father, a worker at the local casket manufacturer, died when she was four. Her mother relied on disability income. Sarah and her siblings were among hundreds of DYS “commitments” in the region who turned to crime for survival…or even just for fun. When she was seven (the earliest age for legal arrest), she was charged with theft of a cigarette lighter.

She was threatened with expulsion the same year for swearing at her teacher and for frequently escaping class. By the time she was 11, she had been sentenced to DYS custody for a string of assaults and larcenies, and had hardly been to school at all in the last two years. Her counselors estimated her to be 16-18 years old, streetwise, but it was only after her residency began that she learned to read. However, she did have other interests that served as through-lines in her life. One was woodworking, taught to her by a family friend who lived in an upstairs apartment. She knew how to build a clock by the time she was in residency. Another hobby was swimming in her grandfather’s pool. And then, most importantly, there was basketball. The sport helped her occupy her time when she wasn’t roaming wild on the town’s main drag, and her interest in it developed while in residency. It was no coincidence that she was transferred to a less severe program for good behavior at age 16.

Following the death of her mother and her release from the program at 17, she moved in with her older brother Sean – himself having been released from residency a couple of years earlier. Acting on a suggestion from him and her counselors, she applied for a job as a kids’ basketball coach. Fortunately for all concerned, this proved to be the turning point. For a couple of years, she coached and continued honing her skills when she wasn’t working towards her GED. Thus armed, she began considering college. Figuring that Atwood would accept a fur of her background, she applied there, and at 19, she headed to Dartmouth to begin her freshman year.

Sarah possesses a lot of muscle mass for her size, as well as a general fearlessness. Over time she has learned how to use both to drive in and out of traffic on the court, create her own shots from the perimeter, and defend against players often a head or more taller than her, and who often sent used to dealing with a player her height. Some of her other strengths are assists, free throws, and going for loose balls. Her highest numbers in her senior year at ADub were in scoring and assists. Her speed on the court has been naturally intimidating for years now. That said, she still needs to develop greater consistency here as she can be streaky.
