It's safe to say that Pittsburgh and Williamsburg have declared war on each other. Despite the regular season success the Minutemen have had against them, it's clear that the pendulum has swung the other way with the Keystones' dominant regular season, brushing aside of their divisional rivals in the Eastern quarterfinals last year, and current position at the top of the Eastern Conference. And the first game, which saw the Keystones eventually win by six, saw hard-nosed, aggressive play that resulted in a rash of injuries and knocking out stars Terrence Tolliver (Pronghorn, G) and Crystal Summers (Cheetah, G) for a period of time. Keystones Coach Anton Schumacher surprised most by using this game to give rookies Erik Kijani (Leopard, G) and Jeyne Callaghan-Burton (Grey Wolf, G) their first starts. Saga Ström (Howler Monkey, F/G) also made her fifth start of the year. The Minutemen's regular lineup showed them they have more to learn. The team jumped out to a ten-point lead after one quarter then led by eight at the half. Fueled by the home crowd's encouragement, the team opened the lead to 17 by the end of the third quarter. That's when the war began again. In an inadvertent swipe to try to grab a rebound, Lance Freewell (Clouded Leopard, C) nicked Desmond Macon (Siberian Tiger, F)'s right ear with a claw, shelving the tiger for the rest of the game. When Rebecca McCloud (Red Fox, C/F) contested him next for a rebound, the vixen came out of the play grabbing at her back and had to sit as well. A few minutes later, Callaghan-Burton took a bad step and twisted her ankle and she was out. Mikaylah Marley (Albino Wolfbat, G), in a show of spirit, contested the larger Brandon Dreyvus (Opossum, F) for a rebound and collided with him. The wolfbat came out of it with a slightly injured neck. A minute later, Dreyvus had to leave the game himself, walking awkwardly and pointing at his right thigh as he left. It was almost comical when Ström dove for a loose ball and left the game favoring her shoulder. But what it spoke to was that the teams didn't take each other lightly, no matter who was on the floor. Hopefully, that attitude is kept throughout the year. None of the injuries, thankfully, were serious. Sonja Tinker (Skunk, F/C) was the star for Pittsburgh, finishing with a double-double (21 points, 10 rebounds). Renee Fiora (Malamute, F) and Sebastian Kosciusko (Toucan, F) led Williamsburg with 20 points apiece. The Minutemen improved to 8-1 at home. - A. Stanton
