Biography
"Ren Inoue was the youngest of his four siblings. The family lived comfortably in Osaka thanks to his father, Tsubasa, high success as a heavyweight boxer in the Japan Kento Athletic Association. Ren doesn't remember much about these happy times, as his father went into a coma and passed away after a title bout when he was only three years old.
His mother and sister saw that Ren had inherited some of his father's athleticism during trips to the park playground, yet saw that he wasn't very good at socializing. Both feared that he may go down the potentially fatal path that took Tsubasa's life or worse, so they both encouraged him to join a sports club once he entered school.
He skipped from club to club until things clicked during his last year of shōgakkō (elementary school,) when he discovered the basketball club. Ren slowly built the through chūgakkō (junior high school, thanks to his various coaches' and fellow club-mates' guidance . Ren constantly stayed after club practice to better himself at the game, partly for the love of the game and partly to avoid having to endure more time with his abusive brothers at home.
His best place on the court was as a point guard. He couldn't score like the others in his club, but he could get the ball to those others. Helping out the team was better to him than getting the winning basket. He also felt a bit more in control of his life on the court than anywhere else, sure there were variables out of his control, but at least he had a better chance there to make a positive change than out in the world where his mother struggled to make a living or at home where his brothers ganged up on him.
Ren's life got much better during his time at kōtōgakkō (high school.) His brothers had moved out of the household, allowing him to focus as much on his school work (which was lacking before) as he did with his game skills.
The subject he loved the most was English language class. In fact he became a bit of an obsessive on everything in American culture, not just basketball. He hoped that if he had high enough skills in English he could get out of Japan and attend university in America. His grades in his other classes, while not horrible, weren't the best, and getting into an American University also meant avoiding the Japanese entrance exams. He contacted as many university scouts as he could, though few came to see him play, and he rarely got a reply when he sent out.
It looked like that Ren would be a ronin until a recruiter from Ecola-Pack University, one of the few that that visited him, offered him a full-scholarship He wasn't picky and he took it. He decided on Communications and Broadcast Journalism as his two majors for his college degree, fearing that if his Basketball Career ended, he could at least be a part of the sport he loved.
Playing basketball in the states, while fundamentally the same back in Japan, was a new experience for Ren. The players were almost always taller than he was used to, and getting the ball to the other positions was giving some trouble. He started taking boxing lessons to help him maneuver around the much larger players following the first semester of freshman year, much to the displeasure of his mother and sister. He also tried out gymnastics class which, with his size, he wasn't great at but helped him hone his mid-range jump shots.
Anything that would help him on the court, he would try at least once. There was no way he could look back, because he didn't want to."
