Biography

Andy is no stranger to withstanding hardship. Unable to remember his mother, who passed before he even turned four, and his father in jail by the time he was eight. With no immediate family willing to take the young hawk in, Andy entered the foster care system.

Angry and confused, Andy lashed out at school and home, making him a difficult one to foster. Passing through over half a dozen foster homes, he no longer bothered to keep count, by the age of 14. His one constant was the basketball court. Didn’t matter where you were from, who your parents were, streetball was all about how good you were, and Andy was pretty good. It helped that he stood taller than most of his peers, already standing at an impressive height of 6’4” as a Freshman, and the hawk was more than willing to throw his weight around; that refusal to back down often got him into fights.

Another altercation at the end of his Freshman year saw him moved yet again. This time into the home of Conrad Richardson, an older veteran brown rat. It would be the last time he moved while in the system. It was far from perfect, Conrad had a predilection for structure that Andy, who was used to getting his way thanks to his imposing presence, opposed. Yet for the first time he felt like he was being treated and talked to like an adult, and not some delinquent teen or fragile chick. Conrad was the first to believe that basketball was more to the hawk than a simple distraction; but he also showed Andy that he needed to change, that the path he was currently taking would not lead him to the FBA.

A new school offered the hawk a fresh start, but his grades were a disaster; precluding him from playing his sophomore year, instead having to spend the entire year focused on raising his grades and catching up to even hope to be eligible. Even once eligible his junior year, the hawk found himself coming off the bench as his brash attitude caused too much friction with the majority senior starting lineup. Only after they graduated was Andy able to really spread his wings, becoming the key piece and carrying the team deep into the state tournament before ultimately losing in the semi-finals.

Only one year as a starter and limited playing time in the year prior, the only offers the hawk received were for D-2 schools. He eventually landed on a local school, Western Oregon Avian University.

College was where Andy truly saw the deficiencies in his game come to light. Streetball’s improvisational style had helped him develop a strong isolation game, one where he could create space with his ball handling. But in a more structured system he struggled to react to defensive shifts and execute his part in a set playbook. Despite his rough edges, his physical abilities more than made up for that, earning him a spot in the starting rotation. After two seasons Andy felt confident enough to throw his name into the transfer portal, hoping a D-1 school had taken notice. He fielded a few offers, in the end choosing to stay local and ultimately selecting Oregon Anthro University.

Transferring meant a redshirt year for the hawk, but he would use that to his benefit. Being unable to play in games gave him more time to refine his technique under solid coaching and build experience in the system.

Now in his 3rd year of eligibility he was an immediate starter, putting up a solid year with 16.4 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game. Though the team would not make the FCAA tournament as they fell on the wrong side of the bubble with a 17-14 record. Season wrapped up, the hawk had a decision to make. He had one year left of eligibility, but with only one season at a major university scouts had him rated as a mid to late-second round player at best. In the end he decided to forgo the draft and return for his final season, hoping to impress scouts enough to push himself up the boards into the first round.

The season started strong, improving his stats with 20.1 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game. The team was on a roll, finding themselves ranked in the top 25 for the first time in years but it wouldn’t last. Just past the midway point of the season, while going for a rebound Andy landed on his teammate's paw, causing Andy’s foot to roll. The hawk fell to the floor in pain, having to be helped off the court by the trainer. The injury would later be diagnosed as a Grade III ankle sprain. The typical recovery time of 4-6 weeks had the hawk hopeful he could return before the end of the year, but as the weeks slowly passed his ankle remained unstable. Finally the doctors recommended reconstructive surgery, ending Andy’s final season in heartbreaking fashion. Denied a medical redshirt distinction, as over half the season had passed at the time of said injury, Andy’s eligibility ran out at the end of the season.

With nothing left for him in college he declared for the 2021 FBA Draft, hoping that teams would overlook the injury. The hawk was left to wonder if he made the wrong decision to stay, now burdened with the medical debt and the worry of a future injury potentially dissuading teams.
