Biography

A combination of wanderlust, a broken home, and being one of the few aspirational jocks in a dying industrial town led Doug to run away from home in the sixth grade.
He spent virtually his entire adolescence as a street 'yote, traveling through much of the USA (including a stint in the furry equivalent of the Rainbow Gathering in New Mexico).
Back in New England (Hampton Beach, NH) at age 16 - and perhaps luckily for him - Doug fell in with a small street pack of runaway 'yotes like himself. One of these was Wagner Vaughters (Coyote, G), who turned out to have hailed from several towns west of him. The two became fast friends, and spent many a slow afternoon or evening practicing street ball when he wasn't entertaining street traffic with his juggling skills for money.
A year later, the pack took in a new member - a 14-year-old named Amanda. Much to his own surprise, Doug fell hard in love with her, and she, him.
It was she who was on his mind one day when, in the summer of his nineteenth year, his friend "Wags" caught news of a furry basketball combine being held in Worcester, MA, and got the bright idea to make the trek west to try out. He suggested Doug come with him, and, on a lark, he did.
Though he couldn't articulate it at the time, he later said that he was beginning to wonder what there was beyond life as a street 'yote, especially with a young girlfriend in tow. He was beginning to wonder how he could take care of her.
To the astonishment of both, the pair did well enough to catch the attention of more than one FBA scout, who suggested the pair declare for the 2009 FBA Draft.
There was no shortage of astonishment after that.
While there, Smith was caught napping under his table when he ended up being the Irrelevant Fur, having been drafted by the Stanislaus Thrust in 48th place.
In 2012, the Albany Alphas signed him to a 3-year contract. By that point he would be leaving California with a championship ring.
In the summer of 2013, Doug and Amanda got married on a mountaintop in New Paltz, New York.
Near the end of the 2014 FBA Season, a drunk driver nearly killed Doug as he was returning from a road game against the Newark Pride. Despite a successful recuperation by the off-season, the new management bought out his contract. After spending the entire 2015 FBA Season in free agency, Dougie announced his retirement from professional basketball on July 24th, 2015.
