Biography

Of the Valerio brothers, Lorenz is the more talented one on the court, or even, the so-called “natural”. He has always been used to the game coming to him. He doesn’t coast on it entirely though, his drive to always prove his father wrong. After coming out to his family at the age of 14, he has never seemed to live up to his father’s expectations, despite surpassing them.

Growing up, Lorenz was the second son, but instead of turning into one of those pampered younger brothers who got all the attention, he would have the same expectations from his father as his older brother Bruno. While their mother was more forgiving and always the one to offer moral support, the father was a stick in the mud when it came to raising his kids. When Lorenz was eight years old, Bruno was twelve years old and had essentially become a prized member of the family. This was an early sign that Lorenz was beginning to harbor some mild resentment toward his older brother. Not out of total hatred, though, but rather because he never seemed to know how to make his father proud while Bruno did.

Lorenz would often wonder what he was doing wrong, but he was never able to figure it out or muster the courage to ask his father. And in spite of his mother's repeated reminders that it would only take some time, the situation remained unchanged as time passed. He would win his father's respect for a short moment, but when he came out to the family at the age of 14, everything would be lost. He wasn't specifically homophobic, but he did have the attitude that it wasn't acceptable in his family.

Nevertheless, Lorenz was accepted somewhere else, and that was when he became 15 years old, his mother took him and his brother Bruno to a reservation while their father was away on business. He would be taught the customs, including traditional dances of the Cree people on his mother's side; it was a long-standing culture that accepted him for who he was. It was comforting. He was able to maintain his cool despite his father's demanding expectations.

As eighth grade was coming to a close, Lorenz would participate in extracurricular activities as a distraction. He was greatly inspired to play basketball by Bruno. It was too late in the season to join the team, but the team would have open scrimmages and he was allowed to partake in those. He was naturally good at the game, and on the court he could let off steam while also avoiding leaving early. He preferred not to see his father's face much. Once Lorenz graduated from middle school, the coach would recommend him to the high school team.

High School

He was immediately given a spot on the varsity team alongside his brother Bruno, who was a senior, because of the high praise he had received. Even though there was a lot of pressure, he did well. He mostly played off the bench during his freshman season, but he also received some well-earned starting time. He would stay after school to practice until he was asked to leave the gym, at which point he would continue at the nearby park. He did this to avoid the situation at home. His playing at a high level all four years of his high school career helped him develop his abilities and potential.

By the end of his senior year, Lorenz would have received a number of scholarships, and while many of them were enticing, he knew exactly where he wanted to play: Vanderbarn University.

Vanderbarn University

It was a fun thought to finish out a season with his older brother again. They’d have a lot of highlights on the court, often selling out the stadium because the crowd loved them so much. The two of them would take the team to the FCAA Tournament along with teammates Zylo and Kid. However, the thrilling style of basketball would come to an end in the third round when they were defeated by Claiborne University.

Lorenz’s season in Vanderbarn was nothing but incredible. He was lacking on the defensive end of the floor, but his offensive production more than made up for it. A ‘versatile scoring machine’ is what best describes him. When he was hot, he was hot, and sometimes he would go on what seemed like a never ending run.

There is a lot of off-court controversy going on that’s been hidden from the media, until during one game where he hit a buzzer beater, he got in a heated argument with his father post-game, which almost broke into a fist fight where Bruno quickly interfered and shouted, “You cheer for both of us, or neither of us, Father!” The entire altercation was filmed and posted online and it became viral overnight. When asked the next day in a press conference, Lorenz stated, “Nothing I do seems to impress him. I’ve never been able to figure out what it is I’m doing wrong for him. It's ironic that despite the fact that I despise him more than I do love him, he is still my father and I still want to win his approval as a son.”

Lorenz declared for the 2022 FBA Draft. It felt good to have the support of his brother, who was his true role model. If there was anything good in his life, it was the unwavering love he received from him. Having him join him in the draft was nothing short of a dream.
